The beaches are along the Hicacos Peninsula, which extends out into the Caribbean Ocean on the north-west coast of Cuba. Along the peninsula, there are more than 20km of white sand beaches.
The area is simply gorgeous, but as a magnet for tourists it can also be a little crowded during the busy seasons. There are a number of world-class resorts in Varadero, many that offer all-inclusive holidays:
• Blau Varadero Hotel Cuba
• Paradisus Varadero Resort and Spa
• Iberostar Tainos
• La Playa de Varadero IV
• Villa Varadero Hotel and Suites
If lying around on the beach isn’t exactly your style, there are a few other things to do around Varadero Cuba. The Bellamar Caves are a wonderful spot for some exploration. The underground cave system is filled with crystal formations and impressive stalactites. Another attraction in Varadero is the Hicacos Point Natural Park. It’s an ecological park where you can hike around through forested woodlands and see some of the coast.
There is an airport that serves the Varadero area, the Juan Gualberto Gomex Airport. It has the booking code VRA and there are many international flights there, so you don’t necessarily have to fly through the Havana airport if you are heading to Varadero.
It’s about 150 km away from the capital city of Havana, so you can take a trip or two into the city if you are staying at one of the Varadero resorts. You can take one of the regular buses for the trip if you don’t want to rent a car.
