Varadero Beaches

The beaches of Varadero run all along the Hicacos Peninsula, on the northern coast of the island. You’ll find about 13 miles (or 20 km) of white sand beaches and blue Caribbean water. Varadero is one of the most popular resort destinations in Cuba, and it’s not hard to see why. Aside from the beaches themselves, there are caves and cays to explore in the area as well. Boating, scuba diving and deep-sea fishing are a few other activities for the area when you are tired of sunbathing.

The Rooms at Sandals

The Royal Hicacos resort has 404 suites, and they are all beautifully decorated and come with many features. All rooms and suites here have:

  • Telephone
  • King sized beds
  • Air conditioning
  • Coffee maker
  • Patios or balconies
  • Full bath
  • Ironing supplies
  • Bathrobes and hair dryer
  • In-room safes

Larger accommodations at the Royal Hicacos include the Premium suites, Concierge suites, Royal suites and one Presidential suite. They offer larger room, and some have complimentary breakfast and other features.

Other amenities at the resort include courts for tennis, basketball, and squash. If you don’t want to swim at the beach, there are 3 pools to choose from, one with a swim-up bar. And you can’t forget the full fitness center and European spa.

Sandals Dining

The Sandals Cuba resort has 5 separate choices for your dining pleasure. You can choose from several different cuisines and atmosphere:

  • Hicacos – You’ll get international cuisine at Hicacos, usually in a casual buffet-style. Open nearly 24 hours.
  • Don Pasquale – Italian food, and open from breakfast until dinner.
  • Las Morlas – The place for fresh seafood, usually only serving at the dinner hour with reservations.
  • El Caribe – You can enjoy some authentic regional and Caribbean cuisine at El Caribe, only open for dinner.
  • El Viejo y el Mar – A very casual grill for international foods, for lunch and dinner.

Aside from restaurants, there are also several bars throughout the resort for drinks.

How to Get There

Sandals Royal Hicacos is close to Varadero, and there is an international airport nearby so you can fly in directly. It’s the Juan Gualberto Gomez Airport, and its one of the busiest in Cuba with good service. If you are driving to the resort from the hotel, it will take about half an hour.

If you want to see a bit more of the island during your trip, you could fly into Havana and rent a car for the 2 hour drive to Varadero. Just take the Via Blanca highway to the east.

** Note, since this article on Sandals Cuba was written, the hotel has changed hands. It’s now part of the Cubabancan Group, and I’ll be adding new details soon. As it is, the resort is basically still the same except it’s now called the Hotel Cubanacan Tuxpan.
